Cincinnati:: Published by the author,, 1866. First edition.. Rear wrapper detached; front wrapper somewhat chipped and a bit soiled; spine split but stitching holding; a little browned; a good, sound copy.. 8vo, original pictorial wrappers, 81 pages. An ephemeral piece of Lincolniana: due to an unfortunate earlier alias, the eccentric Dr. Tumblety was swept up on charges of participation in the Lincoln assassination conspiracy. He turns this pamphlet defense into a lengthy piece of self-advertisement meant to inspire confidence in his herbal treatments and to warn against imposters. Tumblety did apparently possess something of a secret life: he was according to some sources a lover to Hall Caine and (during his residence in England was considered a plausible suspect in the Jack the Ripper case. Atwater 3609; Howes T-413; Eberstadt 167: 289.

Description:
1852 softcover pamphlet discussing the downside of tobacco. When I got this the cover was off. Volume has had some restoration: cover is backed with matching paper and is reattached. Paper and binding are fragile but overall readable with a gentle touch. Primary defect is the corner off the front page. Interior has foxing and stains but no vandalism. I think the author comes out of the same group that published Solomon Spittle (which I also have listed). 1852 is the first year this was published but this is titled "Fourth Thousand" so this is an early printing. Has 8 plates that are included in pagination. 179 pages, complete as issued. An uncommon item generally found in poor condition. This is decent not great (which sometimes is the best you can do). Topic is health problems of tobacco. Discusses addiction, acute toxicity, chronic health problems including heart and lung disease as well as problems of second hand smoke. Feel free to inquire. Please see scans of the book you will receive.

Cincinnati: Published by the Author, 1866. Hardcover. First Edition. 4.75 x 7.5in. 82pp. Publisher's original printed wraps. Self published by the variously infamous Dr. Tumblety, this pamphlet is a screed against his brief imprisonment for taking part in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, which turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. Years later, Chief Inspector John George Littlechild of Scotland Yard believed Tumblety to be Jack the Ripper. In a letter to journalist George R. Sims he writes that "amongst the suspects, and to my mind a very likely one, was a Dr. T... He was an American quack named Tumblety and was at one time a frequent visitor to London and on those occasions constantly brought under the notice of police, there being a large dossier concerning him at Scotland Yard... he was not known as a sadist, but his feelings toward women were remarkable and bitter in the extreme, a fact on record. Tumblety was arrested at the time of the murders in connection with unnatural offences…

"In this book, real life photos are used to help young people feel more comfortable with interacting with other children and making new friends. A Note From Fred Rogers: A child's first visit with a pediatrician usually comes soon after birth. It may be months or even years later, though, that a child first shows fear about going to see a doctor. The worry of an injection or some other unfamiliar medical procedure can trigger that fear. It can also appear because another family member may be feeling medical anxieties. And, of course, new body awareness and needs for privacy develop naturally in children's early years, so all these feelings can make it very hard for them to let doctors investigate the workings of…
