ont> Reeves & Turned : London, 1889 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A beautifully hand-coloured copy of Pierce Egan's popular comic work about the duo Tom and Jerry, illustrated by Robert Cruikshank. Uncommon in the original publisher's boards. Uncommon in the original publisher's boards. Tom and Jerry were characters from Pierce Egan's popular work 'Life in London, or Days and Nights of Jerry Hawthorne and His Elegant Friend Corinthian Tom', a comical duo reflecting scenes of life in early nineteenth century London. Pierce Egan was a popular sportswriter, with his most popular work being 'Boxiana', as his main sporting passion was boxing. He viewed boxing as 'the sweet science'. Egan also wrote 'Life in London', which gained instant success upon its publication. With a hand-coloured frontispiece and thirty-five hand-coloured plates. Illustrated by Isaac Robert Cruikshank, the brother of the fellow illustrator George Cruikshank. Cruikshank was a caricaturist who illustrated an edition of 'Don Quixote de la Mancha'. With thirty-two pages of publisher's adverts to the rear. Collated, complete. Condition: In the original publisher's quarter morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart, though with some lifting to the head of the spine. Slight rubbing to the spine. A little marking to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot and handling mark. Overall Condition: Good.
