London: Frederick W arne & Co Ltd, 1891. 1st Edition. Original Cloth. Very Good Plus. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" Large. Illustrated. Type: Z A super four volume set bound in original bright green cloth with gilt embossed lettering to the spines and front boards. Upper edges gilt. All volumes beautifully illustrated with just over 313 colour plates, all as called for, including frontispiece plates with tissue guards. Light bumps to the head and tail of the spines. The top corners of Volume I , the lower corners of Volume III and three corners of Volume IV are also bumped with a little creasing of the associated corners of the textblock. A little rubbing to the front edge of the spine strip of Volumes I and II near the head of the spine.and several scattered soil spots to the front boards of Volumes III and IV. Light scattered foxing to the fore edges and reverse of the end papers of Volume I and Volume IV and the occasional foxspot to the periphery of a few illustration plates in most volumes. There is a neat small three figure ink number to the top corner of the reverse of the front end paper of Volume I. One illustration plate margin in Volumes I has a short tear , not affecting the illustration. A few page corners, including a couple of illustration pates have been neatly turned. A little splitting to the inner hinge, between pp113 -114 of Volume II, revealing the webbing, though the book remains very tightly bound. There is the slightest chip to the front fore edge of about 5 leaves in Volume IV, barely noticeable. All volumes are very fresh, clean and tight. A well preserved, veyr good set in bright fresh bindings.
