London: Collins, 1968. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. MacLean's 12th novel is this military thriller set in Yugoslavia during World War II. It is also the sequel to "The Guns of Navarone," MacLean's first bestselling novel, and begins as the surviving British commandos from the first book are on their way home when they are ordered to parachute into Yugoslavia, ostensibly to help rescue a division of partisans trapped by the Nazis but also to convince the Germans of an impending invasion to draw off Nazi troops from the Italian front. Book club edition, early printing. About 5 1/2 x 8 inches, 254 pages in brown cloth-covered boards with gold lettering on spine. Dustjacket's front panel shows a tool of some type with German printing, a pair of sunglasses and military insignia patches against a map of Bosnia in the background. Back panel has full-page photo of MacLean. Boards have lightly bumped top corners and a very slight spine lean, o/w no chipping, tearing, scratching or other damage or flaw. Text is complete, clean and unmarked. Not remaindered, not ex-library. Dj, which is Brodart protected, is near-perfect, showing only a tiny price sticker covering part of the last line on front inside fold. (This is by far the best copy condition-wise, of any edition of this MacLean book that we've ever seen.) The book is the basis for a 1978 movie starring Harrison Ford, Robert Shaw and Barbara Bach.
Synopsis
Force 10 from Navarone is a World War II novel by Scottish author Alistair MacLean published in 1968. It is a sequel to MacLean's very popular 1957 The Guns of Navarone, but in terms of plot continuity chooses to follow the also popular 1961 film adaptation, such as including characters who were in the film but not in the book, although it dispenses with the film's major altered back-story.
