Inscribed and SIGNED, most likely by author (his first name only) on front free endpaper. Dust jacket in Brodart wraps. Edge wear, some creasing, closed tears to dust jacket with $3.00 price intact, and several small chips missing, the largest being a 1/2" x 3/4" at top of (dustjacket) spine. Boards with slight rubbing to extremities.Light toning. Text is unmarked. Binding tight. The author was appointed by General McArthur and assigned to the post of American observer aboard the Hashidate Maru, fleet flagship of a Japanese whaling fleet southward bound for the great Antarctic fisheries. He accompanied 300 Japanese seamen and one Australian representative for 132 days, his chief responsibility being to enforce the whaling regulations laid down by Supreme Allied Headquarters in Tokyo.
