Quarto gilt-ruled calf (rebacked in leather with original red gilt title label laid on, tips worn) All edges marbled. Engraved Title + Titlepage in red & black with metal cut vignette "In hoc signo" + [28]pp prelims +160pp (inc. at end "Appendix Fabularum a Marquardo Gudio) +[82]pp indices, 99 Fables with 9 extra scenes illustrated in great detail in 108 roundelles. Los Angeles: Ward Richie, 1929. Octavo. 2pp. This is the second production noted in the bibliography of premier Southern California printer, Ward Richie. The edition consisted of 150 copies; it was a student project, done while Richie attended Frank Wiggins Trade School in Los Angeles. The choice of a Carl Sandburg poem is significant, as Sandburg and Richie shared a longtime friendship with Los Angeles bookseller and publisher, Jake Zeitlin. This is one of the scarcest of early Sandburg editions. 1printed sheet printed on [2]pages folded laid into 1 printed folded sheet (wrapper) lightly finger soiled with small chip to rear wrap. Inscribed copy of this first collected edition of Fuchs' enduring novels about life in Depression-era Brooklyn, "Summer in Williamsburg," "Homage to Blenholt," and "Low Company," originally published in 1934, 1936, and 1937, respectively. Fuchs has lovingly inscribed this copy to Susan Foster, a long-time personal assistant to film and literary mega-agent Irving Paul Lazar, and later Frank Sinatra. The nature of Fuchs and Foster's acquaintance is unknown, though it seems safe to assume that they might have met during Fuchs' long tenure as a Hollywood scriptwriter. His inscription, "From one Brighton Beachcomber to another," also leaves open the possibility that the two had known each other growing up in Brooklyn.
