Publisher's embossed blue cloth, titled in gilt on spine; top edge gilt; 471pp; 48pp publisher's ads; gravure frontispiece portrait and 65 unnumbered leaves of photographic plates (halftones). Spine rubbed and sun-faded, else moderate rubbing and soil to cloth; internally clean, tight, and complete; Very Good. Ownership signature of a May Howard, Oakland, dated 1922.

Baron Albert d'Anethan (d.1910) was the Belgian Minister Plenipotentiary to Japan from 1894 until shortly before his death in July, 1910, a period encompassing both the first Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War. Baroness d'Anethan (born Eleanora Haggard) was a sister of H. Rider Haggard.
