London: Baldwin and Cradock. 1837. Three volumes (complete). Octavo, original quarter-leather boards with marbled sides, gilt title and decoration to spines, pp xxii, 319;i, 296, iv; i, 340. Pencilled ownership signature fep vols. II and III. Spines lightly worn, corners lightly bumped and rubbed, occasional light foxing. Very good condition. Maria Edgeworth (1767 - 1849) was an Anglo-Irish writer, known for her children's stories and for her novels of Irish life. She is considered one of the most influential authors of children's books, "bridging the gap between the supposedly dry, didactic children's literature of the eighteenth century and the livelier, more naturalistic books of the nineteenth" (Hockliffe Project, Hockliffe Collection of Children's Books, De Montfort University.) 4th Edition.
