About This Item

San Diego, CA: Frank W. Fink, 1972. No Binding. Very Good. Frank Wolfe Fink TLS (Typed Letter Signed) Dated October 24, 1972. Project Engineer for the Consolidated PBY Catalina Flying Boat and the Consolidated B-24 Liberator. Aviation Ephemera. San Diego Aircraft Engineering, Inc. Letterhead. 10 1/2" x 7 1/4". Single-sided. Very Good, due to some curl toward top; otherwise quite fine. Letter mentions a signed photograph, but that is not included here. In addition to those two most famous aircraft development projects, Frank Fink experienced a great deal of success as well in aviation pursuits: to quote from the San Diego Air & Space Museum, "He began his long career in the aerospace industry with the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company. Joining Consolidated Aircraft in 1935, he was the project engineer on the famed PBY flying boat. During World War II he became known as "the Father of the B-24 Liberator Bomber" as a result of his leadership in its development and high rate of production. Postwar, as chief engineer of General Dynamics Convair, he developed the Convair 240 series transport, which included such advanced aircraft as the XFY-1 VTOL Pogo Stick and the XF2Y-1 Sea Dart water based fighter. He also contributed to the early Convair missile and electronics programs. Fink joined the Ryan Aeronautical Company in 1955 as vice president of Research Engineering where he pioneered new approaches to jet vertical take-off aircraft. In 1966 he formed his own firm, San Diego Aircraft Engineering Company, performing engineering and consulting for the aerospace industry and the United States government". He was inducted into the Aerospace Hall of Fame in 1968. Provenance provide to purchaser; ships in a sturdy, protective box. Lsmph4
