About This Item
London: Hutchinson & Co. , 1894. Cloth. Very Good Indeed. 8" by 5.5". None. The first English translation of this work by Alphonse Daudet, with original illustrations. First edition thus. Originally published 1874. Translated from the original French by Edward Vizetelly. Illustrated with eight wood engravings from the original publication with many in-text images. Collated complete. The first of Daudet's novels to find widespread popularity, the work confirmed him as one of the few who knew how to deal adequately with the mysteries, the complexities, and the subtleties of human nature and human passion. The novel was also crowned by the French Academy with the Prix de Jouy in 1875. Written by Alphonse Daudet, a French novelist. He was the husband of Julia Daudet and father of Edmée, Léon and Lucien Daudet. Illustrated by George Roux, a French artist and book illustrator. His best-known works today are a large number of illustrations he created for the science-fiction novels of Jules Verne. In the original blue cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear and a small mark to the front board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown.
