1730 1st ed Illustrated FOLIO Bible Overton EXQUISITE ART Theatrum PassionisJohn and Henry Overton were English print-sellers at the beginning of the 18th-century. Little is known of their lives, particularly John. However, the engravings that are known to exist, printed by Henry, are considered exceedingly rare and desirable works of art.'Theatrum Passionis' is an early 18th-century collection of engravings published by Overton, each of which depicts the life of Jesus and notable New Testament stories involving Jesus. In addition to the engravings, this work is a complete New Testament Bible, with annotations of each book.Curiously, this work is a complete oddity. Research yields no clues to its origins, nor is it in any notable references. A remarkable, unique piece with impressive illustrations!Item number: #5479 Price: $950OVERTON, John & Henry.Theatrum passionis or figures of the life and death of our Lord and Saviour Jesus ChristLondon: printed collered and sold by H. 1768 Diderot Encyclopedia Plates HUGE FOLIO Medicine Architecture Vesuvius Art

The Enlightenment's most-important general encyclopedia!

Through the mid-18th-century, large collections of knowledge were relegated to specific areas of study like law, medicine, or religion. However, Denis Diderot's 'Encyclopedie' changed the public's knowledge base as well as setting a standard for future generations of acquiring knowledge on many different subjects. This was the first encyclopedia to include contributions from many different named writers. It also was the first encyclopedia to describe work-related topics like agriculture, engineering, cooking, and trade.

This enormous tome is the complete volume of illustrations from the 1768 edition of Diderot and d'Alembert's famous encyclopedia. It features 294 full-page and folding engravings covering a wide variety of topics including human anatomy, surgery and medicine, military and war, art and architecture, zoology, chemistry, and music and theater. Description:
1875. An album dated 1875 featuring the work of the "Beehive Club", with over 150 uniform postcard sized watercolour and pen works, gathered into themes. The output of a very talented, most likely youthful, or at the very least gleefully amateur, Victorian sketching club, possibly executed via correspondence, each member being given a brief to work with, and the results being carefully added to the album. The artworks are arranged around a regularly changing theme, often literary, such asworks centered on Longfellow's "Evangeline", or Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe", and sometimes the themed suites are broader and open to interpretation, as in the collection merely entitled "Winter", or the section titled "Ruins." Most of the offerings are titled and captioned in red ink, in one hand, presumably that of "M.B.O." who seems to have had the duty of being club archivist, carefully initialling each work according to artist ("E.D.", "M.P.K.", "F.M.B." etc.), recording the theme or subject in an elaborate gothic… Read More

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
