The print depicts Hopkins in three quarter profile, facing to the right. He wears a dapper hat and small black bow tie, and is outlined against a leafy landscape. Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844 - 1889) is regarded as a leading Victorian poet who influenced T. S. Eliot and Dylan Thomas among others.

McCurdy (1942 - 2016) was a noted American author and illustrator, recognized for his trademark b&w woodblock engravings. He was also the founder of Penmaen Press in Boston.
