Florence [Italy]: G. P. Vieusseux's Reading Rooms and Circulating Library, 1896. Near Very Good condition. Pages are age toned, but NOT brittle. A few pencil check marks (easily erasable). January 1896. G. P. Vieusseux's Reading Rooms and Circulating Library. This copy lists English Books of Biography, History, Travels, Fine Arts, etc. (pages 1-251). The title page calls for a section listing "Novels" to begin on page 253, but that section, if ever published, isn't included in this copy. We consulted the Library of Congress and British Library online catalogues but could not find any copies of this book that do include a section on Novels. This lending library, established in 1819, claimed 200,000 volumes in all languages. Subscribers could borrow books by mail or in person. This library claimed some 20,000 English language titles in the collection. Bound in are 1st and 2nd supplements with additions through 1901. Subscriptions rates, postage costs, and terms are explained. The long list of complicated rules to be followed when returning books by mail, indicates that 19th century postal officials had way too much time on their hands. Scarce. Bound in contemporary three quarter red cloth and marbled boards.. "New Edition, Fully Revised". Hardcover. Near Very Good condition.
