About This Item

London: John Murray, 1883 . First edition. Leather. Very Good. 8" by 5.5". Not Stated. The first edition of Victorian traveller Isabella Bird's illustrated account of her travels in the Far East. Illustrated with eleven plates, a folding colour map, and further vignette illustrations. Collated, complete.A wonderful first edition from this prominent nineteenth century English explorer, the first woman to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society. Her account not only provides valuable insights into distant lands, but also shed light on the challenges and prejudices faced by women during the Victorian era. This is an epistolary account of Bird's travels in Canton, Hong Kong and Singapore, and her observations about the Golden Chersonese, the name used for the Malay Peninsular in classical antiquity.Bound without advertisements. In a full calf binding, with gilt detailing. Rubbing to back strip and joints, otherwise externally smart. Front hinge strained, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned, with only the odd spot. Very Good
