Boston: Little, Brown, & Company, 1934. First American Edition and true 1st hardcover edition of this book. Price of $1.25 front flap, title page date 1934, copyright page states copyright 1934, published June 1934. Near Fine, period bookstore sticker front pastedown, 2 pages small corner crease bottom corner, light foxing to page block edges, and spine a bit age-toned, in a beautiful Near Fine dustjacket with tiny creases at top edges of spine and flap folds. The American 1st edition was published in June 1934, and by the time the Hodder & Stoughton British hardcover was published in Oct. 1934, Little Brown had already published its106th thousand copy. Previous to the hardcover publications, it had been published as a supplement for an English newspaper and by the Atlantic Magazine. Having benefited from Little Brown's success with the book, the H & S 1st printing would have been much larger than Little Brown's, and indeed, the LB 1st is much the scarcer of the two. Filmed twice, the 1939 film was directed by Sam Wood, winning a Best Actor Oscar for Robert Donat and garnering six other Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Greer Garson. The 1969 film was directed by Herbert Ross, starred Peter O'Toole, Petula Clarke and Michael Redgrave, and garnered two Oscar nominations. "Good-bye, Mr. Chips" was also made into a 1984 TV mini-series and a 2002 TV series. A truly gorgeous copy, and quite SCARCE. Pictures are available upon request. . First American Edition. Cloth. Description:
London: Printed for J. Walker, 1788. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 12mo. A very good four volume set in contemporary, full tree calf binding with double lettering pieces in red and green. Complete pp. [iii]-vii, [1] 222; [2], 206; [2], 238 & [2], 198. No half-titles which may or may not be wanting, but the pagination for the prelims to vol. I might suggest that one is required? Very good bindings with a little rubbing, a couple of volumes slightly chipped to the head/tail of the spines, corners lightly bruised. Contents clean and tight, manuscript (Greek?) initials to title pages dated 1788 otherwise unmarked, no foxing, paper crisp. A very good set. A Rare Eighteenth Century Novel. We have managed to located just one other copy at auction in the last thirty years and that at Sotheby's sale of July 21, 1993, where it made £1,000 on the hammer, though seemingly not such a nice copy. Steinbeck, John. The Long Valley. New York: Viking Press, 1938. First Printing of the First US Edition. First Printing. A Near Fine copy with the usual age darkening to the front pastedown in a Very Good plus unclipped dust jacket with gentle wear to the extremities, and a short closed edge tear at the head of the spine. A collectible copy of this collection of classic Steinbeck fiction. This volume of stories collected with the encouragement of his longtime editor Pascal Covici serves as a wonderful introduction to the work of Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck. Set in the beautiful Salinas Valley of California, where simple people farm the land and struggle to find a place for themselves in the world, these stories reflect Steinbeck's characteristic interests: the tensions between town and country, laborers and owners, past and present. Included here are the O. Henry Prize-winning story "The Murder"; "The Chrysanthemums," perhaps Steinbeck's most challenging story, both personally and artistically;… Read More

Description:
This is a complete 19 Volume set of "HOUSEHOLD WORDS" - A Weekly Journal by Charles Dickens. The volumes span the years 1850 (Volume I) to 1859 (Volume XIX). The significance of this set is that Volume IX contains the 1st appearance of the Dickens classic "HARD TIMES" (please see photos). "Hard Times was first published serially in "Household Words" in the April 1, 1854 issue (volume IX), followed shortly thereafter by the 1st edition in book form in the same year. Seldom found complete in 19 Volumes."Household Words" was an English weekly magazine edited by Charles Dickens and was published every Saturday from March 1850 to May 1859. This set contains 19 hardcover volumes which contain the complete run of individual issues. To boost slumping sales, Dickens serialized his classic novel "Hard Times" in weekly parts between April 1st and August 12th 1854. It had the desired effect, more than doubling the journal's circulation and encouraging Dickens, who remarked that he was "three parts mad, and the… Read More

Cleveland, 1966. Faint toning. 11 x 8.5 inches. Title leaf of translucent paper with an original drawing by levy. Mimeographed. 12 pages, on rectos only. Stapled wrappers, front cover with original ink scarab drawing by the author mounted. One of 33 copies. A scarce publication by one of levy's unnamed presses, being Edouard Naville's translation of 'The Litany of Ra.' The large original drawing of a scarab on the cover is reflective of levy's interest in the symbol, which he used as the title of his collection 'Scarab Poems.' Though neither his name, nor that of one of his presses, appears in the text, this has all the hallmarks of levy's important mimeographed books, and appears less frequently on the market than others. Description:
v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
