About This Item

Cardiff: University of Wales Press, 1963. First edition. Cloth. Fine/Very Good. 8.5" by 5.5". None. A smart first edition copy of this interesting historical work regarding the Grail Story, by a leading medieval scholar. The first edition, first impression. In the original full cloth binding with the publisher's unclipped dust wrapper. With three full-page monochrome plates. Collated complete. An interesting work regarding the history of the Grail story, from Celtic myth to Christianity. With reference to Celtic literature, sacred legends, folklore and symbolism. Although this work was undoubtedly met with controversy, Loomis hoped that it would come to be accepted as the most consistent and realistic treatment of such complicated material. Roger Sherman Loomis was a leading American scholar on medieval and Arthurian literature. He is best known for his work on the Holy Grail, as well as his investigations into the roots of Arthurian legend. The half title page is present. In the publisher's original, full cloth binding. Externally, excellent with light shelf wear to the edges. Some slight bumping to the upper spine. The odd light mark to the boards. The original unclipped dust wrapper is in smart condition. Shelf wear and chipping to the edges. Age-toning to the panels. Spine is darkened. Spotting to the panels. Closed tear of about two inches to the rear panel. Creasing to the rear panel. Internally firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean. Offsetting to the front blank. Light age-toning to the page edges. The odd spot to the fore-edge. Fine
