Included here is a long chapter on BLACK GIRL with the letters Shaw and Farleigh exchanged. Well illustrated with photos, line drawings, some of Shaw's drawings, and reproductions of Farleigh's wood engravings. A review of the book from the NEW YORK TIMES (7/11/1940) is tipped-in on the front pastedown endpaper which has left mild newsprint offset to the adjacent free endpaper. Index. John Farleigh (1900-1965) describes in the chapter "The Black Girl" (pp. 210-72) how he worked with George Bernard Shaw to famously illustrate The Adventures of the Black Girl in Her Search for God (1932), which was "the first mass-produced book of the period to contain wood-engravings [and] was effective in popularizing the medium for commercial book illustration as well as for the private presses" (ODNB).
