About This Item
London: Robson Books, 1995. First edition. Hardcover. Inscription and owner's signature on first free end-paper, else fine/price-clipped. 8vo. Boards. Pp. xxii. 346. Illustrated. Bibliography. Index.
Assistant Editors: David Prosser and Andrew Pierce. With a Foreword by the Rt Hon. David Mellor QC MP. The author, Matthew Parris, was himself a member of Parliament and later, notably, wrote about politics for The Times. For his former role he was elected because, he claims, he rescued a dog from the Thames, and his greatest achievement was an effort to end the imprisonment of prostitutes. In this book he writes, most entertainingly, about some of Britain's juiciest scandals, such as the one which has recently been dramatized for TV starring Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw: Few twentieth-century scandals rival the Profumo affair, but the humiliation of Jeremy Thorpe comes close.
