About This Item
Leipzig: Von Veit & Comp., 1914 8vo (22.5 cm), VIII, 476 pp. Publisher's cloth, gilt-lettered spine and front board (binding rubbed at extremities, joints slightly cracked but firm, stamp on front free endpaper; ownership entry on the title page; one leaf loose). The first edition of a book by the German mathematician Felix Hausdorff (1868-1942) presents his research on the theory of sets, focusing particularly on the development of a formal axiomatic system for set theory. Hausdorff's work on set theory was significant in shaping modern mathematics and establishing its foundations. In the book, he delves into properties of sets, the nature of set operations, and the importance of axiomatic systems in comprehending these phenomena. Furthermore, Hausdorff introduces the concept of cardinality, which serves as a measure of the size of sets. "A very rare case in mathematical literature: the foundations of a new discipline are laid without the support of any previously published comprehensive work" (DSB VI, p.176).
