About This Item
Leipzig: Von Veit & Comp., 1914 8vo (22.5 cm), VIII, 476 pp. Publisher's cloth, gilt-lettered spine and front board (binding rubbed at extremities, joints little cracked but firm, stamp on front free end-paper; owner's entry on title; one leaf loose). First edition of a book by German mathematician Felix Hausdorff (1868-1942). The book presents Hausdorff's research on the theory of sets, particularly his work on the development of a formal axiomatic system for set theory. Hausdorff's work on set theory was important in the development of modern mathematics and helped to establish the foundations of the field. In the book, he discusses the properties of sets, the nature of set operations, and the role of axiomatic systems in understanding these phenomena. He also introduces the concept of cardinality, which is a measure of the size of sets. "A very rare case in mathematical literature: the foundations of a new discipline are laid without the support of any previously published comprehensive work" DSB VI, p.176.
