About This Item
Philadelphia, 1814.. [8],112pp., including illustrations, plus eleven plates (the first seven of which are numbered). Half title. Contemporary paper-covered boards. Small puncture to upper inner corner of front board, extending into several leaves of text. Bookplate on rear pastedown. Tears in upper edge of half title and titlepage. Tanned and foxed. An unsophisticated copy, untrimmed and partially unopened; about very good. Self-styled ninth edition, after the first of 1812. One of three respected military treatises by William Duane, noted aggravator of the Federalists and eventual husband and partner of Benjamin Franklin Bache's widow. This manual proved exceedingly popular, extending through numerous editions between 1812 and 1814. The plates show proper military formations, ceremonial rituals, and the presentation of arms. A note on the half title, dated March 19, 1813, informs the reader the text "will be received and observed as the system of Infantry Discipline for the Army of the United States." One of the more accessible early 19th-century military manuals, greatly enlived by its illustrations. Scarce. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 31363. DAB V, pp.467-68.
