1834. Near Fine. 1 handwritten document, dated 10 Nov. 1834. P. Cambridge will pay to Wingate & Gaskell, merchants of Philadelphia, $494.41 by 10 Aug. 1835. Cambridge authorizes James Macmanus, Esq., to appear on his behalf. Witnessed by Andrew Curtin. Signed on the reverse by James Gilliland, prothonotary, and Samuel Milliken. James Macmanus was an attorney in Centre County, Pa. Peter Cambridge had a general store in Bellefonte, Centre Co. Andrew Curtin (1815-1894) was from Bellefonte, Pa., and was a lawyer before serving as governor of Pennsylvania from 1861 to 1867; he later served in the U.S. House of Representatives and as U.S. Ambassador to Russia. James Gilliland (1804-1889) was prothonotary of Centre Co. from 1831 to 1836. During the Civil War, Gov. Curtin appointed Gilliland commissary and quartermaster of the 1st Regiment of Pennsylvania Veterans; later he was transferred to Washington as assistant agent for Pennsylvania. In Near Fine Condition: folded; just starting to separate along one fold; back is slightly soiled; otherwise, clean and solid.
