About This Item

London: Hollis and Carter, 1951. xii, + 198pp., one unpaginated line-drawn map (Daniel Brownstein) that indicates a radius of destruction in a theoretical H-Bomb detonation centred over New York. Book clean and square. Bright gilt title over lightly bumped cloth spine. Plain, original red cloth boards very good. A small, original seller's sticker affixed to rear pastedown, else textblock lightly age-toned and unmarked. Illustrated (rear panel: author, together with Albert Einstein) dustjacket noticeably edgeworn and nipped, with a fingernail-size piece missing from upper rear panel, plus colour loss on spine. Basing his survey on published scientific data, the author speculates on the potential of a devastating, destructive (still to be tested - 1951) device - the Hydrogen Bomb . . . Contents include: Prelims., Foreword, 5 chapters, Appendix (A - D). Footnote: The author, William L. Laurence (born Lieb Wolf Siew, 7 March, 1888, Lithuania), a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, and official historian of the Manhatten Project, was a controversial denier of radiation fallout and its lethal effects . . . Book weight approx. 260g. *Postage charge will be reduced as this item will post under 500g. packed weight. . First U.K.. Hardcover and Dustjacket. Very Good/Fair +. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
