About This Item

1769 La Henriade Voltaire ART French Henry IV Siege of Paris Marmontel Lisbon 2v

"Let us read and let us dance; these two amusements will never do any harm to the world."

― Voltaire

'Henriade' is one of Voltaire's most famous and important poems. This work concerns and celebrates the life of Henry IV of France. While not tremendously popular during Voltaire's lifetime, 'Henriade' has continued to be one of the most popular 18th-century poems on the life of French royalty.

This 1769 edition was published in French with English dedication to Queen Caroline Matilda by Jean-Francois Marmontel. The second volume of this highly valuable set contains numerous additional works including:

· A poetic essay on the Lisbon disaster

· "Discours en vers sur l'homme'

· On Natural Law

o In this, Voltaire comments on wars of religion including Henry IV's Siege of Paris

· Notes on Henriade

It is worth noting that Voltaire actually made additions and corrections to this edition with dozens of new lines of poetry not found in earlier editions.
