London : T Cadell and W Davies; R C and J Rivington; et al, 1812 A very good set of this 20 volume edition with black and white frontispiece, 2 folding maps, and 681 hand coloured plates. With an account of Buffon's life by William Wood. It is rare to find this set with hand colouring. In contemporary full speckled calf bindings that have been rebacked to provide new spines with gilt-lined raised bands and title and volume labels. The original boards have scuffing and pitting, and there is light wear at edges and corners, but the bindings are in very good clean condition. Endpapers are marbled and some of the front pastedowns have a scuffed area indicating the removal of bookplates. 2 of the volumes have the armorial bookplate of the Right Hon. Sir Robert Peel, Bart, who was Prime Minister 1834-5. and 1841-6 and is viewed as the founder of the modern British police force. Liverpool: Henry Fisher , 1820 A very good 2 volume set of the 1st edition, newly rebound in half calf with marbled boards. With 2 decorative frontispieces, 1 decorative title, and 106 hand coloured plates. The title pages are undated but Vol I has a preface dated 1820 and the 1st edition was produced between 1816 and 1820. This copy is in new half calf with gilt lines title labels and volume numbers to spines. The marbled paper matches the marbling on the page edges. New endpapers. All the plates are in very good clean condition and are well coloured. The paper quality varies with the paper in the first half of Vol II being noticeably toned and prone to light spotting. Contents - Vol I: frontispiece; decorative title; title; preface 2 pp; introduction, instructions on finding a plant, and text (to letters KYL) with 56 plates pp 1-790. Three volumes, small quarto, pp viii, 96, (6); iv, 188; iv, 188, three vignette title pages, an extra hand-coloured title page in the first volume, with 137 fine hand coloured plates, all edges gilt, bound in a Victorian half morocco and cloth, the spines highly decorated in gilt, a little rubbed at the joints and corners, the cloth sides slightly marked and very slightly bubbled in a few small places. In Volume 3 title page and the first two plates and text are a little stained at the upper corner, the subsequent three plates and text pages very faintly marked; otherwise this is a remarkably clean and bright set internally - the plates all have their protective tissues which very occasionally have a faint spot of foxing, but nothing has transfered to the surface of the plate.
