About This Item
Cape Town.: Salesian Press From the text: THE CASTLE, OUR SECOND FORTRESS "The Castle, our Second Fortress. The Castle was not the first defensive work on the shores of Table Bay. In the same year that Van Riebeeck landed at the Cape, he erected a four-pointed earth work for about 200 yards from the Castle, to the N.W., on a site within the boundaries of the Parade. Van Riebeeck's fort was built mainly as a means of protection against the Hottentots and the wild animals. But when the Dutch realised that the "provision station" at the Cape was worth maintaining, the Castle was built to protect the Settlement from the British and any European power that might have designs on the Cape." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- An undated tourist pamphlet - 24 pages including black-and-white photographs ------------------ Orders over $100.00 are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
