Madrid: Oficina De D. Benito Cano, 1789. First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Four volumes in contemporary acid calf, published 1789-1791, second volume has two tears in the leather where it adhered to the front of volume one, gilt spines, corners bumped, small scratches (Volumes III and IV), hinges and bindings intact. Marbled end papers, damp stain to bottom, right corner of free endpapers through first portions of text (Volumes I and II). Volumes I and IV have second damp stain along outside margin scattered throughout, text unaffected, light worming; still attractive overall and mostly clean. Vol I: [16], 423. Vol II: [8], 435 (401-408 repeated but nothing lacking). Vol III: 436. Vol IV: [4], 466, [1]. Important and much reprinted dictionary of historical figures born in Madrid. Alvarez y Baena, himself a native of Madrid, expanded upon some of the earlier works of Jerome de la Quintana, Gil Dávila and Leon Pinelo. Size: Octavo (8vo). 4-volume set (complete).
