About This Item
London: Punch, 1922. 1st Edition 1st Printing. No Binding. Very Good/Not called for>. Coloured print featuring Tim Healey, the First Governor- General of the Irish Free State. Healey is featured with the wings of an angel in flight strumming an Irish harp. The Governor- General of the Irish Free State was the official representative of the British Crown in Ireland . By convention the office was largely ceremonial . Nonetheless, it was controversial , as many Irish Nationalists regarded the existence of the office as offensive and a symbol of continued British involvement in Irish affairs. The role of Governor-General in the Irish Free State was removed, by the Irish Government, from the Irish Constitution in December 1936.
