About This Item

1675 Tertullian & Origen Apologetics Early Church Apologetics Pagan Heresy Bible

"Truth persuades by teaching, but does not teach by persuading."

― Tertullian

Tertullian was a 2nd-century early Christian church author and apologist. His works helped establish Western theology and early Church doctrine. He emphatically defended Christianity against pagans as well as defended 'freedom of religion' as human right unable to be taken away. One of his important apologetics was an anti-Jewish treatise to counteract Gnosticism and other philosophically based doctrines.

In the 17th-century, author Petrus Motta, also known as Pierre du Fosse, published an apologetic treatise against paganism and heresy written through the lens of the history of Tertullian and Origen. Motta also describes the state of the church in the 2nd and 3rd centuries with events from both the secular and ecclesiastical world.
