About This Item

Chicago Illinois: Munsell Publishing Company, 1905. Early days in Tazewell County, IL, are recalled in excerpts from the hard-to-find 1905 book: Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois and History of Tazewell County, published by Munsell Publishing Company of Chicago. The Tazewell history was edited by Ben C. Allensworth. The 115-page spiral bound booklet is printed one-sided on 60# paper. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the front cover. Subjects discussed include: County Organization and officials; Various County Seats; First Grand Jury; Old Settlers Association (with many names); County and City Fairs; Murders; the Little Mine Riot; Two steamboat calamities, Two tornadoes, Two train wrecks, and an Explosion at Morton; the Press of Tazewell County; Businesses, Lawyers and Doctors; Various "firsts" in the county; the City of Pekin -- street names, city officials, schools and teachers, churches; Social Organizations -- the Tazewell Club, the Litta Society, Pekin Woman's Club; Pekin Public Library; the Fire Department; Manufacturing Enterprises; Histories for Hittle, Little Mackinaw, Mackinaw, Deer Creek, Boynton, Hopedale, Tremont, Morton, Delavan, Dillon, Elm Grove, Groveland, Fondulac, Malone, Sand Prairie, Cincinnati, Spring Lake, and Washington Townships; City of Washington, City of Delavan, Villages of Mackinaw, Tremont, East Peoria, Morton, Minier, Hopedale and Green Valley. One unusual feature of this booklet is the inclusion of the names of public school graduates from various schools in the county. Memoirs of three pioneers -- Nathan Dillon, Mrs. Margaret Young, and Joel Hodgson -- add interest and color to the factual data. They also recall names of many early settlers and describes the hard times they overcame. . Limited Edition Reprint. Spiral/Comb . New/No Jacket. 8.5" x 11". Private Press.
