About This Item
Constable & Co. / Hurst, Robinson, Edinburgh / London, 1825. First collected edition. Hardcover. Very Good/not applicable. Balfour's 'Annales of Scotland' for the most part, written in Scots vernacular and covering the period 1057 - 1652. A most presentable, clean. tight and sound copy. Complete in four volumes. Andrew Carnegie's set, with his bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. The set passed from Carnegie's estate to another famous collection - the Foyle library at Beeleigh Abbey, Essex. There are no bookplates or inscriptions recording the Foyle ownership but the set was purchased ( by us ) at the recent dispersal of the last of the Beeleigh Abbey books. The Foyles acquired many Scottish books from the Carnegie sales and we have other examples in stock. The bindings are of red hard grain morocco, half bound with matching cloth boards. Raised bands to the spines, gilt lettering and decoration. The bindings have no issues other than light rubbing here and there and they remain unfaded. An attractive set for the bookshelf. About 1800 pages over the 4 volumes, full collation on request, portrait frontispiece to Vol. 1, indexed in Vol. 4. Approx. size 9" by 6". A heavy set but no extra postal charges for UK customers. Quantity Available: 1. Category: History ; Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 28805. .
