L. Paisey and the edition then revised and augmented by Skelton in 1963 after another German edition in 1963. This heavy work is the quintessential reference on cartography evolved from a resolute and determined scholarly examination by the Russian cartographer Leo Bagrow (1881-1957) but aimed at a different academic level than his normal readers and students and although the history of cartography apparently can't be comprehended in a single volume, this detailed treatise comes close and has beautiful colour reproductions of important maps as well as copious b/w illustrations of maps from the very earliest known examples. Although wearing a 1964 date on the title page, this seems to be the 1966 reprint with corrections.
