About This Item
Revised and enlarged by R.A. Skelton. C.A. Watts and Co. Ltd. London. 1966 reprint . Large 8vo. XVI and indices, 312pp. Hardcover of blue cloth boards with gold embossed map on front board in good condition though no d/w or slipcase however, text in very good condition with only minor soiling of edges and corners and no foxing butminor library adhesive tape marks on both free eps Revised by the superintendent of the Map Room at the British Museum, the translation from the 1944 and 1951 German was done by D. L. Paisey and the edition then revised and augmented by Skelton in 1963 after another German edition in 1963. This heavy work is the quintessential reference on cartography evolved from a resolute and determined scholarly examination by the Russian cartographer Leo Bagrow (1881-1957) but aimed at a different academic level than his normal readers and students and although the history of cartography apparently can't be comprehended in a single volume, this detailed treatise comes close and has beautiful colour reproductions of important maps as well as copious b/w illustrations of maps from the very earliest known examples. Although wearing a 1964 date on the title page, this seems to be the 1966 reprint with corrections.
