Philadelphia: L.J. Richards & Co., 1888. Early days in Kent County, Delaware, are recalled in this new 176-page excerpt reprinted from J. Thomas Scharf's History of Delaware 1609 - 1888. The book, originally published in 1888 by L.J. Richards & Co., Philadelphia, PA, is printed on 8 1/2" x 11" 60# opaque paper. The front cover is an 80# card stock, protected with a vinyl sheet. While the book does not include a biography section, it is full of names of early residents, beginning with a list of 1680 taxpayers, a census of families, a list of land grants, a list of officials (including justices of the peace and notaries), property owners, bank directors, town commissioners, town councils, officials of various "hundreds", lists of persons assessed in 1785 in various sections of the county, Smyrna Circuit preachers, etc. The book includes a history of the City of Dover and its early residents, including Richard Wilson, William Morton, John Curtis, Griffith Jones, John Walker, Thomas Bedwell, Samuel Burberry, John Bradshaw, James Maxwell, John Mifflin, Richard Richardson, Benjamin Shurmer, John Lindsay, Thomas Wells, Francis Richardson, Charles Hillyard, David Rees, Joseph Booth Jr., William Rodney, Robert Willcocks, Cornelius Empson, Thomas Tarrant, John Brinckloe, Thomas Nixon, Benjamin Chew, James Corell, Nicholas Ridgely, Timothy Cummings, Joseph McDaniels, Andrew Hamilton, Edward Tighman, Charles Ridgely, King Dougall, Dr. John Horn, and numerous others. There's an extensive history of Christ Church, and histories of other churches, a history of Schools in Dover, the Dover Library, the Post Office, Hotels, Banks, Utilities, Businesses, Societies, and other items of interest. Subsequent chapters include: East Dover Hundred, West Dover Hundred, Duck Creek Hundred, Little Creek Hundred, Kenton Hundred, North Murderkill Hundred, South Murderkill Hundred, Mispillion Hundred, and Milford Hundred.
