1680 King Edward 1ed Medieval England Gaveston Despenser FOLIO Cary PROVENANCE

Edward II of England was an early 14th-century king of England best-remembered for his political turmoil which arose from his relationships with Piers Gaveston and Hugh Despenser. Edward gave unwarranted privileges to these nobles (who had significant wealth and influence) – an act that angered other barons. So much so, that these other nobles executed Gaveston for his actions to the king. Edward's relationships with these men caused his reign to be one of the most tumultuous reigns of medieval England.

Author Henry Cary wrote an important 17th-century survey of Edward II's reign which focused primarily on the rise and fall of his two closest allies – Gaveston and Despenser.

o Armorial bookplate – Earl of Ormonde and Ossory

The peerage title Earl of Ormond (or Ormonde) and its related titles have a long and complex history, with the earldom of Ormond being created three times in the Peerage of Ireland. Since its creation, the earls have taken significant roles in the government and military of Ireland and kept a tradition of loyalty to the English crown and to English custom. Its complications began in 1528, when Henry VIII pressured Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormond, 1st Earl of Ossory (c. 1467–1539) to rescind all claims on the earldom in order to gift them to Thomas Boleyn, the father of Anne Boleyn. Though the titles were eventually restored to Butler's lineage, fierce debates and battles were fought over claims to the titles, which only became more confusing Thomas Butler, 10th Earl of Ormond and 3rd Earl of Ossory KG PC (c. 1531–1614), or "Black Tom," who was an influential courtier in London at the court of Elizabeth I, passed without a legitimate male heir. This bookplate possibly belongs to John Butler, 17th Earl of Ormonde, 10th Earl of Ossory (1740–1795), an Irish peer and Member of Parliament (MP), who officially reclaimed both titles with the acknowledgement of the Irish House of Lords in 1791. 1748 ENGLISH Vauban FORTS Military Engineering Fortifications Illustrated War

Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban was a 17th-century French engineer who, after serving as the Marshal of France, became known as the greatest engineer of his time. It was from his surveys and developments in fortifications that propelled him to engineering fame. In fact, his fortification philosophies were used for nearly a century after his life. Vauban understood that at some point, all forts would fall, no matter how powerful. From this, Vauban sought to improve fort designs to absorb as much of the attack force as possible, even including house and structures to support fortification walls.

This 1748 English edition of Vauban's famous "Method of Fortification" contains each of the highly desirable 32 engravings – views of forts, walls, and common attack strategies.
