348 pages. Near Fine. The only flaw is some lightening of the spine due to tanning. The book has no marks of any kind except for inscription from author to former owner and fellow member of The Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton K.M. Setton (1914-1995).

Volume 2 of the series Studies in the History of Mathematics and Physical Sciences edited by Klein and Toomer, this book is an important study of the development of the bases and foundation of modern numerical analytical theory.

Dr. Goldstine (1913-2004) was a mathematician, computer scientist and pioneer, military liaison and administrator for the construction of the ENIAC machine during World War ll, and subsequently an IBM Fellow. He made considerable contributions to mathematics, the history of computing and numerical analysis and variation calculus, and directed the IAS Machine (1952 electronic computer with 1,700 vacuum tubes) project at the Institute for Advanced Study.

Description:
A little foxing here and there, and some fraying of the spine heads and heels, but all pages clean and tight. One foldout has two small tears.Arguably the greatest diary in English by possibly the world's greatest diarist. This is Henry B Wheatley's 1896/1897 10-volume publication (the diary in 8 volumes, plus the index published in 1924 and the Pepysiana published in 1928). This is the diary the world knew until Robert Latham's and William Matthews' nine-volume definitive edition of 1970-1983.These eight volumes of the diary belonged to and bear the bookplates of Duke Georg Alexander of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1859-1909), eldest son of Grand Duchess Catherine Mikhailovna and a cousin of Emperor Alexander III of Russia. He was a Major General in the Russian Army, a skilled musician and the founder of the Mecklenburg Quartet.

Dust Jacket a little frayed at top of boards and head of spine, spine of jacket tanned, volume itself in fine condition, no marks, no corner bumps, has inscription from author on flyleaf, his obituary pasted on inside of flyleaf. Page tops dyed. 300+ illustrations.John McAndrew's magisterial and comprehensive study of a virtually neglected subject: the history, development and functions of the unique structures built to accommodate the worship of the huge numbers of indigenous people converted to Christianity by the few hundred friars accompanying the Spanish conquistadors. Such rapid conversion of so many people had never happened before, and provisions had to be made for them in the absence of traditional European (or local) structures of worship. Combining indigenous and European roots, traditions, building techniques, practices and customs resulted in what McAndrew calls "...what may be the most dramatic American architectural innovation before the skyscraper: the outdoor church of… Read More

434 pages. Solid and clean, a little age-darkening, a little foxing and a few light stains on a few early pages; binding slightly cocked, front hinge just starting. This is the second state of the first printing, because the word transposition on pg. 419, line 14 has been corrected, and the copyright date of 1921 is on the copyright page only; no other printing stated. This book was part of a variety-store lending library back when such things existed, and bears the store's bookplate on the flyleaf.Tarkington won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction twice, once for The Magnificent Ambersons (1919) and once for Alice Adams (1922). Although mostly forgotten today, he was considered America's greatest novelist during his lifetime, on a par with Mark Twain, led best-seller lists and had many of his novels made into movies, such as Alice Adams by George Stevens in 1935 and The Magnificent Ambersons by Orson Welles in 1942,

According to naval historian Suzanne Geissler, Mahan may have been the most influential American author of the 19th century, certainly in terms of his influence on the navies of the world at the time, and up until today; arguably his work was pivotal in establishing the United States as a world power.
