London: John Wright , 1652 A good copy of the 'Third Impression much Augmented' in full leather binding with new spine with raised bands and title label and contemporary boards. Blith (1604-1654) was known as a writer on husbandry. He was a supporter of Cromwell as the decorative title page with the motto 'Vive La Re Publick.' demonstrates. The book sets out and promotes improvements in husbandry and was suppressed after the Restoration in 1660. The binding is sound and clean. There is a lot of wear and leather loss at the corners. The marbled endpapers look to have had repair and are probably predate the binding work. The contents have toning and there has been some close trimming to margins notable in the epistles section at the beginning where page titles are missing but there is no loss to text. Half-Leather with marbled boards and mottled closed edges. Leather spine rubbed and worn to edges with 4 inch tear to head of spine, corners bumped, edges lightly. Gutters cracked, f-fep also partially detached to head and foot, else binding sound. Innermost endpapers lightly browned, small ink inscrip. to title page. Book plate inside front board, three sentence quote written in ink and 1 inch tear to f-fep. Some light foxing in small patches throughout and a light dampstain visible to top margin of many of the pages (3inch x 0.5 inch), small crease to corners of several pages near the end, else remarkably preserved, an excellent copy.. London Printed for John Wright, at the Kings-head in the Old- Bailey. , 1653. . 1653 4to. [26], 274, [12] p. 2 folding plates, 2 full page and 1 other woodcuts of implements in the text. Additional engraved title page laid down. Bound in later russia ornately panelled in blind and gilt by Charles Lewis. Rebacked preserving the original spine, with raised bands, panelled in gilt and blind tooling. All edges gilt. Bookplate of the Taylor Institute with their neat disposal stamp. The text block clean and crisp and the folding plates in fine condition. An attractive copy. First published in 1649, in which year there were two issues. This, the third edition was substantially re-written and expanded so as to become almost a different book. Blith advocates drainage work, leys and the benefits of manuring by folding sheep and cattle, all ideas in the forefront of agricultural techniques of his day. See Fussell p. 52. Wing B3195. Walter Blith (1605-1654) has been called by Robert Trow-Smith "the greatest of the mid-seventeenth century writers" in the field of agriculture (English Husbandry, 1951). In this work, Blith advocates draining and making water meadows, inclosure, the use of manures, and plantations. "In spite of the currently fashionable interlarding of Biblical references and quotations his directions are surprisingly clear: but like many another he was too far in advance of his time to be generally heeded, and it was more than a century later before any real progress was made with the improvements he advocates" (Fussell, p. 53).
