About This Item
New York: F.M. Lupton Publishing Company, 1875. First Edition Thus. . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. This was Warfield's first novel, a Gothic fiction featuring a young woman from England coming to live with her grandmother in the U.S. She discovers her grandfather, long believed to be dead, living secretly on the second floor where he is engaged in an insane attempt to create a youth-restoring medicine. The novel is the story of their relationship amid a dark and violent family history. It was a bestseller when published anonymously in 1860 by "A Southern Lady" by Derby & Jackson. This 1875 F.M. Lupton edition is a First Edition Thus. About 5 x 7 3/8 inches, 413 pages in red cloth-covered boards with a black title box and floral decoration on the front cover, and gold title box and black lettering and decorative floral design on spine. Edges and spine ends show wear, mild bumping, no tears or chipping. Text edges somewhat soiled, pages slightly age-toned. Text is complete, clean and unmarked except for previous owner's name on fep. No tears, no creases. Warfield wrote seven other novels but this, her first, was probably her best.
