Bound in period tree calf, raised bands, gilt tooling. At some time, [ not recently ], corners of boards have been repaired, some scuffing and abrasion wear, head of spine chipped, rubbed. Generally a nice binding. Internally, a few plates have minor crease marks, 1 plates lacking part of margin, not affecting engraved area. Pages and plates in good clean condition. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Inscribed twice by the United States' youngest founding father, George Walton. 400 pages plus index and "List of Books Lately Published." Original 1732 brown leather 5-ribbed binding. Hogarth engravings appeared first in 1726. Nine (9) total plates, including the frontispiece. This 1732 edition features clear, sharp impressions of the plates, unlike some of the later editions. The frontis plate of "Mr Samuel Butler" is by J Van der Gucht, (sculptor). Four Hogarth plates. One Van der Gucht plate, with additional folding plates. Miscellaneous chapter embellishments throughout. Each of the Three Parts separately titled, with Part III printed for B Motte [1732]. Edge wear to boards and tips. Scattered foxing and a few small stains to text. Pages 205-208 have a bit of the top corner missing. Spine has been expertly repaired.
