London: Macmillan and Co., 1876. Book. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Eleventh thousand. First edition, probably second printing. Buff colour cloth with black decoration to front and rear covers and title in black on spine and front cover. All edges gilt. Condition: Good, with general light shelfwear, light sunning and soiling to covers. Previous owners bookplate on front pastedown. Crease to upper right corner of pages from pages 49 to 83 (the last page of text), and the last page after this. Light foxing to endpapers. Tissue guard to frontispiece is not present. No other tissue guards present. 83pp. 9 b/w illustrations by Henry Holiday. The word baker is written instead of butcher on p.83.
Synopsis
If-and the thing is wildly possible-the charge of writing nonsense were ever brought against the author of this brief but instructive poem, it would be based, I feel convinced, on the line (in p.4)
