About This Item
Philadelphia: Lindsay & Blakison, 1860. Octavo. New Edition. 408 pages, 7 plates illustrated by Felix Octavius and Carr Darley. A woman of letters and philanthropist. Her marriage to an affluent merchant became difficult since he disapproved of her literary efforts. She nevertheless persisted writing anonymously an historical epic on the destruction of the Native American tribes through U.S. expansion and disregard of treaties. As her husband began to suffer financial reverses, she became the primary source of the family income. She was the best-known woman poet in the United States. She led in women's education, temperance issues, Native American rights and the need for institutional care for the disadvantaged. She supported African American schools and churches in her Hartford community as well as the institution for the deaf. She argued that since women often become the economic support of the family, they should receive equal pay and have equal educational opportunities. Bound in full brown crush morocco, board edges ruled in gilt, raised bands, lettering gilt, wrap around gilt tooling and top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt morocco turn-ins, off-setting to p. 268 and 269 apparently from a bookmark once laid in. A very nice clean copy with just a bit of chipping to head.
