Knopf, New York, 1944. First edition. Condition: Very good in good dust jacket. Book has some browning due to age, dust jacket has edge wear and nicks, spine has tears, price clipped.

This is a series of essays written in the early 1940s during the German occupation of France and which take the form of imaginary interviews. They range for an introduction to the theatre of Goethe to a firsthand report on the liberation of Tunis and reveal larger issues than at first glance.Gide received the Nobel prize for literature in 1947.
