About This Item
Paris: Variete a Paris, 1948. Original wrappers. Light shelfwear. Very good. Small 8vo. 226pp. Edition limited to 1750 copies, of which this is no. 25 of 250 on Rives. Part of the series Le Cœur et l'Esprit. A reprint of a work first published in three volumes in 1789. As with many of Rétif's works, the author and members of his family appear thinly disguised. Here, Rétif himself appears in three roles, as Jean de Vert, 'Un homme singulier' and 'Le Musicien.' 'Mlle Balbin' is Agnes Lebegue, Retif's wife, while 'Le Monstre' is Auge, Retif's repellent son-in-law. This edition of Ingenue Saxancour, including the Avant-propos by Gilbert Lely, was reprinted in 1965 at Paris by Jean-Jacques Pauvert.
