About This Item
(Printed by Bradbury and Evans for) Richard Bentley, London: 1852-1853., 1853 Three volumes. pp. xii, 339; vii, 288; vi, 364 + 19 engraved plates by George Cruikshank, John Leech, and others (most with marginal damp stain, but text quite clean). Tall 12 mo. 209 mm. Half leather bindings, over marbled boards; slightly rubbed. All edges marbled. Hardbound. Very good. With the engraved Railroad Bookplate of Robert Heysham Sayre, South Bethlehem, PA 1900 (the long-time President of the Pennsylvania & New York Railroad). Richard Harris Barham (1788-1845), was an English novelist, humorous poet, and priest in the Church of England. He was very much better known by his nom de plume - Thomas Ingoldsby. From Wiki: "on the establishment of Bentley's Miscellany in 1837 he began to furnish the series of grotesque metrical tales known as The Ingoldsby Legends. These became very popular, were published in a collected form and have since passed through numerous editions. In variety and whimsicality of rhymes these verses have hardly a rival since the days of Hudibras. But beneath this obvious popular quality there lies a store of solid antiquarian learning, the fruit of patient enthusiastic research, in out-of-the-way old books, which few readers who laugh over his pages detect." Even with the dampstain on the plates, this is a very attractive set of the fifth edition of this classic work. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! JUN5 SETS SW2 Language: eng. Hardcover. Very Good.
