Name Roberts to upper margin of title later partially overwritten by Rachel Dowding, West Dulwich. Pastedowns have been covered by tan silk. Final blank lacking corners and some offsetting from the last printed page. Some pale foxing thoughout. Side notes giving references and dates.

Small quarto plum roan spine extra gilt compartments & faux bands with cloth sides (tips a bit worn/rebacked with old spine relaid/cloth rubbed). Portrait Frontis +hand coloured titlepage +printed titlepage +Portrait +xxiii [1]p blank +312pp. Text pages with some foxing, more so to first & last pages. Plates mostly clean & white but a few have pale edge foxing. Two tissue guards torn, one at p17 lost. The plates are all beautifully hand coloured and heightened with gum.

Vianen (Jan van Vianen) dated 1701 + 49 woodcut initials & ornate figurative metal-cut head- & tail-pieces (some repeats but large & finely detailed).. Quarto gilt-ruled calf (rebacked in leather with original red gilt title label laid on, tips worn) All edges marbled. Engraved Title + Titlepage in red & black with metal cut vignette "In hoc signo" + [28]pp prelims +160pp (inc. at end "Appendix Fabularum a Marquardo Gudio) +[82]pp indices, 99 Fables with 9 extra scenes illustrated in great detail in 108 roundelles. Lacks folding portrait of Prince of Nassau (often omitted), Plate 18 misbound at page 50. Some staining from former damp most evident to early leaves & at end of book but hardly affecting the plates. *Most luxurious of the Dutch Phaedrus editions specially made for the Prince of Nassau (Lamb Annales Phaedriani 96, Cohen-deRicci 797-9, Landwehr 247).

Duodecimo white moire covers printed in blue and red the lower cover having a lady in costume carrying a basket (rubbed and spine worn and damaged to head and foot but still together) 16 leaves in two leporellos of 8 attached to each cover. These include couple in a horse drawn carriage Noord-Hollandsche chais + Eiland-marked + Amsterdam Weeskinderen + Vlaardingen Zuid-Holland + 2xFriesland + 2xScheveningen Vishkar (fish sellers in a dog cart) & fisherman leaning on a boat + Milkmaid from Utrecht + young ladies from Brabant + Groningen + Zeeland + Amsterdam + Friesland. One hinge repaired. A nice concertina folding costume book of 165 x 110mm page size with a little light foxing and the image in a domed ground of approx 11 x 7 cm. Well colored and parts made shiny with gum arabicum.

London: Dodsley 1st first edition, 1780. Hardcover. Good. Two Volumes octavo 19th century half calf with 5 faux raised bands gilt and tan title labels (tips slightly rubbed) xxxiv +412pp (ii)+432pp +[208]pp of index for both volumes. Titlepage of first volume is damp marked and the following three leaves of dedication and the last 8 leaves marginally so. The last two leaves also slightly browned but all paper supple and strong. There is sporadic & pale marking with volume 2 having a marginal ink spot to pp311 sl.offset to 310 and marginal damp to approx 10 leaves + the index. Ownership E.Kensington and note to pastedown that it was given my Mrs Bell in remembrance of her husband. *Madan was a loose-living lawyer when he attended a service by John Wesley, this led to his reform and he became a convert and took holy orders serving as chaplain of a Charity - Lock Hospital.
