About This Item

Book Store stamp FLEP, light toning, else contents appear as unopened, unread & unblemished in wraps displaying minimal surface/edge/wear, as shown.

The Trade paperback published simultaneously with the small print run hardcover edition of approx. 2000 copies. Winner 1975 National Book Award. Second Novel, published some twenty years after "The Recognitions". "Gaddis" "JR"

Winner of the 1976 National Book Award, J R is a biting satire about the many ways in which capitalism twists the American spirit into something more dangerous, yet pervasive and unassailable. At the center of the novel is a hilarious eleven year old--J R--who with boyish enthusiasm turns a few basic lessons in capitalist principles, coupled with a young boy"s lack of conscience, into a massive and exploitative paper empire. The result is one of the funniest and most disturbing stories ever told about the corruption of the American dream

Synopsis

William Thomas Gaddis, Jr.  was an American novelist. He wrote five novels, two of which won National Book Awards. JR won the National Book Award in 1976. This ingenious, thought-provoking book is written entirely without the use of chapters. The narration is a funny critique of capitalism and is meant to mimic contemporary society. Written mostly in dialogue, one of the stories is of an 11 year old boy, who utilizes payphones and money orders to obscure his true identity and turn his penny stock into a fortune. A thought- provoking, collaborative style makes this novel unique, spectacular and well worth the time.
