(8)pp. with several hand colored plates printed only on one side, bound in pictorial printed wrappers, previous owner's name dated 1840, some darkening to edges and soiling, spine with separation. A good copy of this very scarce, fragile and very early hand-colored children's poetry book locating only 3 copies via OLC.

This scarce book includes the full text of five stories by Helen Bannerman: "Little Black Sambo," "Sambo and the Twins," "Quasha," "Bobtail," "The Teasing Monkey," and "Kettle-head"--all with Bannerman's original illustrations in full color. The book is clean and tight, with a very narrow band of fading along the top edge of the red cloth cover; pages are clean and illustrations are bright and unfaded; 2 pages have a 3/4" closed tear in the bottom margin; one page has one chipped corner. The rare dust jacket remains reasonably bright, with light soiling and toning and significant shallow chipping along the edges.. 3rd Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Fair+. Moderate shelfwear with frayed spine ends. The spines are a bit darkened. Previous owner's name, dated 1882, is written on both front free endpapers, along with that of a later owner. Rounds' first book, "a true account of the seemingly incredible exploits and inventions of the great Paul Bunyan", not based on any extant folklore, but, as Rounds admitted some years later, mostly made up by him. Rounds, born in South Dakota in 1906, was an itinerant worker for some years, studying art under Thomas Hart Benton (Jackson Pollock was a fellow student) at the Art Students League of New York from 1930-31 and convincing Holiday House to publish this book shortly after their founding; he went on to write or illustrate over 100 books in an over-60-year career.
