About This Item
Berlin: Ernst Siegfried Mittler und Sohn. Very Good. 1900. Hardcover. xii, 521 pages; Publisher's binding: White cloth lettered in gilt on the spine, with paper label centered on the front cover - printed in black and red, pattern-printed gilt endpapers, all edges gilt. Second year of this long-running yearbook devoted to German Navy, maritime and seafaring subjects. Frontispiece of the S. M.S. Kaiser Willhelm II. Three folding plans of the Panama and Nicaragua canals - [Plan vom Nicaragua-Canal. General-Plan des Panama-Kanales. Profil-Karte des Panama-Kanales]. The text is divided into parts. First Part -- 'Aufsätze maritimen, politischen und historischen Inhalts' (Contents include articles: Flottengesetz 1900. The Third and final Part is devoted to Statistics -- (Übersicht der Marinebudgets der größeren Seemächte. Übersicht des deutschen Rhedereibetriebs. Jahresproduktion des deutschen Schiffbaus und des Weltschiffbaus. Verkehrsstatistik der deutschen Seehäfen. Statistik der Welthandelsflotte und des Welthandels. Statistik der deutschen Hochseefischerei. Übersicht der deutschen Kolonien. Vertheilung des Kabelnetzes der Erde.) A particularly interesting year for this important reference series, with details of the progress on the interisthmus canal passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans; folding plans are included for both the routes through Nicaragua and Panama. This huge engineering project, long a dream of those concerned with trans-oceanic travel by sea for any purpose, was nearing the final push towards construction -- the choice of Panama was still nearly 3 years in the future. There are also details of the first German transatlantic cable, and even a substantial article concerning the American Civil War (concerning the naval blockade of the Confederate States -- pp. 89-123). Minor soiling and wear to the covers -- along with evidence of the removal of a small Private library label from the base of the spine, but a complete and internally clean and tight copy of this volume, which helps trace the beginnings of Kaiser Wilhelm's build-up of the German Navy leading up to the first World War. .
