Limited to 250 copies printed on special paper, specially bound, numbered, boxed and signed by the author. 558pp. Frontis portrait of Marshall and a portrait of Sutter, both in color, 25 illustrations from various sources and 4 facsimile inserts in rear pocket. Facsimile map insert is missing from this copy. Half simulated black morocco over marbled boards, gilt-lettered spine. A fine copy with double slipcase (outer slipcase soiled and spotted). This work includes extensive notes to the chapters, an appendix of documents and a full index, as well as extra inserts in the rear pocket that were not included in the regular edition. Undoubtedly the most thorough biography of this central figure in the California Gold Rush, well-written and documented..

The Argonaut Book Shop was founded in 1941 in the middle of the financial district of San Francisco. The Argonaut was a founding member of the Antiquarian Booksellers\' Association of America and has been a member in good standing ever since. The Shop is now located just three blocks from Union Square in downtown San Francisco and is open six days a week. Parking facilities include ample street space and a parking garage close by.
