Philadelphia: John C. Winston, 1904. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 2 vols. frontises, photos, index, folding map, x, 377, vi, 374p. Original white cloth cloth with gilt lettering and decorations. Red cloth djs. 21 cm. Backstrip and front covers have some light foxing and toning that has produced a mellow white coloring thant contasts with the purer white of the back covers. John C. Winston's business card laid in Vol. I one which someone (Winston?) has written "Complimentary." Original red cloth covered slipcase present and reasonably sound with some splitting and wear. The fabric jackets and elaborate gilt decorations on several of the early 20th century books published by Coates and Winston have a special charm. Hartshorne's "Japan and Her People" is found in bound in a variety of colors but all seem to have the same gilt cover decorations and lettering.
