About This Item

Philadelphia: Dr. D. Jayne & Son, 1934. First Edition, First Printing. Stiff decorative wrappers. Very Good.

Stiff decorative wrappers with typographic titles in two-color. The text block is stapled and glued to the wraps. 152 + [8] advert pages; 4.5 by 5.25 inches, (13.3 by 10.8 cm).  Occasional in-text drawings.

The bindings are tight and square. Text clean, even toning. Moderate shelf handling wear with minor hand-soiling.. An uncommon vintage post-prohibition pocket cocktail manual OCLC/WorldCat cites only 3 copies in institutional collections.

Jayne's was a patent medicine manufacturer. There are adverts in this booklet for their various products, ranging from skin cream to laxatives and 'tonic pills' for gentlemen wishing to still be "frisky at sixty".

Along with recipes for cocktails and mixed drinks, there are also formulations for making "lost" elements such as Stoughton's Bitter, Angostura Bitters, Orange Bitters, Usquebaugh Cordial, and other oddities.

"...since the blending of liquors, wines and other delectable beverages into satisfying drinks has been a more or less 'secret art' for the past decade or more, our happy escape from the restrictions of the Eighteenth Amendment (may it rest in peace!) calls for some sudden knowledge of these mixtures." [the author].

Subjects: Cocktails; Bartending. Non-alcoholic Cocktails (Boissons); Mixology
