About This Item
1900 edition of first volume of series marking important moment in German Literary history. Very good first edition of Stefan George and Karl Wolfskehls' selection of Jean Paul's work published in May 1900 under the Blaetter Fuer Die Kunst imprint. Richly decorated by Jugendstil Artist Melchior Lechter'woodcuts on Japan paper. One of 400 copies. Slight creasing to corners and shelfwear. Otherwise tight copy in wraps. "In the introduction to his selection from Jean Paul's work, George argues for two centers of gravity within German Literary Tradition – one occupied by George, the other by Jean Paul. If George is the master of clarity, precision and balance, then Jean Paul provides the objects aura, colors, hues and tones. " (Paul Fleming, The Pleasures of Abandonment, Jean Paul and The Life of Humor, Konigshausen & Neumann, 2005 Artists Rights Society, (ARS) New York, BGBildKunst, Bonn. ) From Collection of Henry Church.
